Greaterville/Kentucky Camp

This video tells of the founding of Greaterville, a mining town of 1875, and the rich gold placer fields surrounding it. It is said that over 29,000 oz. or gold and 6,000 oz of silver came out of these placers surrounding Greaterville.

Later the Santa Rita Water and Mining Company was formed and their headquarters were built in Kentucky Wash and was called Kentucky Camp. This company was formed for the sole purpose of bringing water to the rich placers so they could use hydraulic mining to recover the gold.

Later on Kentucky Camp became a cattle ranch until 1960 when it sold to the Alamax Mining Company who had it until 1989. The U.S. Forest Service took it over and made it part of the Coronado National Forest at that time.

A sunny hot day with the sun beating down on a propane tank possibly created excess pressure in the propane hose going to the heater. Even though tent ventilation flaps were open, the sudden rush of propane gas and a spark or possibly the pilot light set it off creating a massive fireball blowing out the side vent of the tent.

This is a story as told by Barry Storm in his book, "Thunder Gods Gold". We take a close look at this treasure story to see if there is in fact any truth to it. It is up to the viewer to make their own decision once we present the facts in our research of the characters in this story.

With over 200 books and articles about the treasures lost in the Superstition Mountains we strongly have our doubts about most of them being factual. Would you chase after the gold in this story?

A subscriber to my YouTube channel contacted me about a mine he had a claim on in Arizona and also some mines close to where he purchased property in Glencoe, CA. Being a Vietnam Vet, as I am, I decided to meet up with him and look at the mines he was curious about in California.

When Jim and I were searching the area we came across old stone foundations and a pile of pottery shards probably from the boarding house. The pottery shards came from five different pottery factories in the same area of England.

These are pottery shards Jim and I found at the old construction camp that was used to build the dam. After it was built the construction camp became a place to go with a boarding house, two saloons, a general store, and boat builders.

When the dam overtopped and failed in February of 1890 the construction camp disappeared as people left and took everything that wasn't nailed down.

Lost Treasures at the El Malpais Lava Field

In this video we tell of two stories that W.C. Jameson told about in one of his treasure books titled, “Lost Treasures of American History.”

The first story titled, “Lost Spanish Treasure in the Lava Beds,” deals with 14 pack mules each carrying 300 lbs. of silver ingots on their way down to Mexico City from Spanish mines near Durango, CO. Supposedly the pack train got attacked but not before the Spanish had time to bury the silver and then tried in vain to fight their way out.

Jameson’s stories may have a thread of truth to them, and he mentions at the end of this story that a rancher named Soloman Bilbo had married an Acoma Indian woman and learned of the Spanish massacre as it was passed down through generations by word of mouth. As you know the Native Americans didn’t care about treasure and were only interested in the horses, mules and the eradication of these Spanish intruders.

So, how does Jameson come up with 14 pack mules of silver carrying 300 lbs. of silver each? A pack mule normally carries about 20% of its body weight and back then they were small and probably weighed no more than 400 to 500 lbs. meaning they probably were only carrying about 100 to 125 lbs. each. Also, the purity of the silver dore bars that were smelted at the mine were probably only about 70% pure. Taking all that into account thus trims the value down to about $500,000 at today’s prices. Was there a treasure and were they attacked coming or going from the mine?

The second treasure story titled, “Black Jack Christian’s Lost Train Robbery Gold.” It was about a train robbery around Grants, N.M. that took place on November 6, 1897.

Jameson tells of Black Jack and his two outlaw partners robbing the train of $100,000 in gold and silver coins along with a canvass bag full of watches, jewels and money they took from the passengers.

In researching the story, I read a newspaper article written a couple of days after the robbery saying there were four outlaws not three.

Next, I researched Black Jack Christian and found out he was killed in an ambush by a Sheriff’s posse and date of death was April 28, 1897. If that being the case then he wasn’t alive to rob the train on Nov. 6, 1897.

Another fact is that $100,000 in gold coins, which were most likely $20 gold pieces, would weigh 1 troy ounce each so the weight would have been 342 lbs. If 20% was $1 silver coins the weight of the silver would have been calculated at 1 troy ounce being worth $1 or 20,000 troy ounces which would equal 1,371 lbs. Don’t think they hauled that much weight in their quick getaway. One must question the $100,000 in the robbery.

Always remember to research the treasure story as often they are embellished to attract the greed that resides in many of us that clouds our judgment in seeking the truth.

           Cheers,

A good friend found this stone with the carving on it while out hiking in the mountains of Arizona.

He took me there to show me it and through our reseach we know that the earliest that the

Spanish were in the area was around 1520 and then again in 1540 but no records of anything earlier.

           So, what does this mean?

With an arrow on top of stone I would say the 1508 has something to do with a distance.

But a distance to what and is it in varas a Spanish measurement during that time period?

A vara is approximately 33 inches.

You have a cross and a triangle below it so what does that mean?

There were no missions built yet in the area until Father Kino did in 1691.

There were three built around 1629 in now what is the northeastern part of Arizona and they were destroyed

           during the 1680 Pueblo Revolt.

So, if the 1508 is in varas could it mean 1508 varas to a church treasure or mine?

We also found a few petroglyphs in the area which date back about as far as 1,800+ years ago.

           What are your thoughts?

This video talks about a treasure around Horse Mesa, Arizona and intertwines Spanish markers found in the area to possible trails to old Spanish mines.

Did the Spanish markers show the route the King’s men took to get to the rich mines? Did the Jesuit priests pass this way leaving some of their treasure behind as they fled the King’s men?

Did the lost two hikers find part of the Jesuit treasure in a canyon? This is rough country and not for the faint hearted. Maybe it is better to stop at Tortilla Flat and talk about the lost treasure as the 105-degree temperature outside makes the cold beer much more enjoyable.

that Metal Detectorist Mike Higgins had found the jar with the clue to the $100 Bill. The clue said to go 15 paces due north and you would find the $100 Bill. After sending me the picture he said that they couldn’t find the $100 Bill. I assumed, like many, that someone had already found it.

Todd said that they went half the distance to the spring, per the directions that I gave, and then turned and went due north 15 paces using his compass. They stopped within a foot of the jar containing the $100 bill and quickly found it using their metal detector.

$225,000 in Gold Coins

Pine Springs Stagecoach Robbery, where's the gold? The treasure hunt for the $225,000 in gold coins stolen in the Pine Springs Stagecoach Robbery.

This story was another one told to me by John, whom I mention in my book. It is also a documented robbery and some details can be found online.

The location of the old Pine Springs Stage station is approximately 45 miles north and west of Payson, Arizona. More details on how to get there can be seen on the video. The elevation is about 7,500 feet so it is nice up here in the summertime and a good reason to escape the desert heat and do some camping.

The story goes that in 1879 a stagecoach carrying $225,000 in newly minted gold coin was robbed at the Pine Springs stage stop. The outlaws, led by Henry Seymour, robbed the stage as it came from Santa Fe, New Mexico and heading to the territorial capital of Prescott.

A passenger was killed and the stagecoach driver, Mose Stacey, escaped out the back of the stage station. The outlaws didn’t worry too much about his escape as they knew it was a good day’s ride to get to Prescott and back with the sheriff. What the outlaws didn’t know was that the sheriff and the posse were only a few miles away looking for some other outlaws when Mose Stacey ran into them.

Within a short time, the sheriff and posse surrounded the stage station with the outlaws inside and a gun battle ensued. After an all-night siege, the sheriff ordered the stage station set on fire from the back. When the four outlaws came out the front door they were met with a volley of rifle fire that quickly killed all four outlaws.

When the stage station fire was put out the sheriff and posse searched the building and never found the cache of gold coins.

Where did the gold coins go? Did the outlaws have a camp nearby where they had taken the chest of gold coins to bury them? Was there another member of the gang that got away with the gold?

While searching both sides of the Colorado River for the Lost Cache of Gold Nuggets I stopped by the Ranger’s Office at the Picacho State Recreational Area.

It is located about 20 miles north of Winterhaven, CA and the road getting there is mostly a rough gravel and sand road. If you go a truck would be a preferable vehicle of transportation. The ranger’s office is not staffed full time so the caretaker at the campground may be able to help you.

There is a campground there along with a boat ramp even though I wouldn’t take my boat on the road getting back there. You can get there by boat on the Colorado River from the Arizona side downstream at Martinez Landing or Fisher’s Landing. The old Picacho Mill Ruins are a short hike from here.

In the Ranger’s Office I was shown an old map drawn in 1920 by a lady named Mariana Sambrano. It was a map of the Colorado River as she remembered it and included roads, houses, the schoolhouse, mines, and mills on both sides of the river. It seemed to be more detailed on the California side than the Arizona side probably because of the mining going on around Picacho.

It is well worth looking at just as it was perceived by somebody that lived during that time period and how they remembered things long forgotten.

           Enjoy!

This was a first story told to me by John, who I met in Strawberry, Arizona, and whom I write about in my book. He totally believed that he knew where the Lost Dutchman Mine was and he intertwined it with the Lost Two Soldiers Mine which makes one ask the question; “Are the Two Lost Mines one of the same?” These two Lost Treasure Stories take place in the notorious Superstition Mountains just outside Apache Junction, Arizona.

There have been many books written about the Lost Dutchman Mine and people from all over the world have come in search of it. It has been said that over 30 people have died while searching for it. Some were found decapitated, some shot, some died from exposure to the desert heat, and some totally disappeared never to be found.

about this treasure hunt I found a couple of photos I took when I first came upon what I believed was the “Silver Vein” that Miguel had talked about in the story.

These pictures show an old bucket and a small cigarette tin that I believe were Miguel’s which had been setting up in the mountains for close to 100 years. The bucket had rusted out somewhat but in the desert where there is very little rain this is what I would have expected to see.

Upon finding these I was elated and believed, after searching on and off for over ten years, that I had finally found the lost silver vein. It was in an extremely rough area to get to, and I don’t believe any cattle or cowboys had been this way during the past 100 years.

The pictures show my camp out on Mesquite Lake, which is a dry lake bed, along with a pictures of myself with the bucket and by the vein.

Update: Treasure in the Arizona Mountains - The Lost Confederate Treasure

           UPDATE:

Recently the following viewer of this video relayed to me a story about a wagon with an army payroll in gold coins and other valuables that went over a cliff. This story may tie into the gold coin story somewhat better than the gold coins being part of a confederate treasure. The following is what he posted below the video, so it could be a good lead.

           From Bret DaCosta:

"Actually, it was the payroll for Fort Apache and not confederate but Cavalry. Lieutenant Summerhayes was leading the first resupply mission on "Crooks Trail" from Camp Verde to Fort Apache. The year was 1874 and a wagon was lost over the cliffs when two mules separated from a team of six leaving four mules and a wagon to plummet over a cliff several hundred feet and not retrievable. This is documented in a book by Margaret Summerhayes called "Vanishing Arizona". Seems Margaret was fond of the mules a was saddened to hear four had perished along with a wagon. Not knowing at the time what was in the wagon she found it to be the wagon that held her fine china and silverware she had brought from New England. The wagon also carried the $3,000 plus payroll in $20 Gold Pieces and Silver Coins it also had a cargo of Winchester Repeater rifles."

“GOLD” in the Medicinal Properties of Desert Plants

This is a story about a "weed" the old guy in my book told me about that cured his pneumonia. In the video I take you up into the New York Mountains in search of the "Weed" to find out what it truly is.

This video is based on what was told to me by John, whom I mention in my book, who told me many of the treasure stories I wrote about.

John was born in a small mining town in the early 1900’s and when he was a little boy, he often time played with the little Indian children in the area. At about this time he came down with pneumonia and one of the Indian families, that lived close by, gave his father some type of weed to boil up as a tea to drink for the pneumonia.

John said he drank the tea before going to bed and when he awoke in the morning his pneumonia was gone. Over the years he said he went back several times to stock up on the weed and it was located not far from the old mining camp, now gone, in the New York Mountains. John said the mining camp had a railroad at one time coming into it and the camp was located somewhere south of Nipton, California. He never gave me a name of the mining camp and only said it was completely gone now.

I was producing a video on a lost silver vein in the area when I decided to look for the old mining tow

n John told of. What I found was a name of an old mining town on a topo map that looked like it had a railroad going through it at one time. The name of the old town was Barnwell, CA and it was located about 12 miles or so south of Nipton, CA by the way a crow flies. The road out to it is gravel and rough in some spots but I believe this is the town John talked about. The old railroad bed is still visible, but ruins of the old mining town have pretty much disappeared.

The New York Mountains surrounded Barnwell, so I studied the topo map and ventured to the south towards a higher part of the mountains. John said that the weed he collected for the pneumonia could be found at an elevation between 5,000 and 6,000 ft.

Join me as I look to see if I can find this mysterious weed John talked about and showed me over 25 years ago. Can I identify the weed after only seeing it once? And what is this weed?

The Lost Guadalupe Mine

This is a story told several times in John D. Mitchell’s treasure hunting books that he wrote. The starting point to the story is at the Tumacacori Mission located south of Tucson and north of Nogales.

In the story the Jesuits supposedly placed 2,050 burro loads of silver and 905 burro loads of gold and silver bullion in a mine called the Guadalupe Mine. After the task was completed, they blasted two peaks above the mine and sent rock down covering the mine entrance.

Mitchell story says the mine is located one league from the gates of the mission to the southwest. Another mine is mentioned in the story called the Tumacacori Mine which holds a copper chest with church artifacts and a map of all the mines in the area. It is supposed to lie close to Tumacacori Peak. It was also covered up.

In this video we talk about the history of the Spanish coming to this area, take you to see two missions, and at the end take you into the mountains to see some of the ruins that still exist. Was there any truth to the story, that is for you to decide?

Lost Ivanpah Silver Vein

The Lost Ivanpah Silver Vein is the story that was told to me by John, who I mention in my book, and which I devoted a chapter to.

The story was told to John by his father, who was a mining surveyor and directly involved in the story. The story takes place close to Sandy Valley, Nevada which is about 30 miles south of Las Vegas.

Miguel, who ran the stagecoach station on Mesquite Lake, a dry lakebed, and John’s father were good friends. While on his way to complete a surveying job he stopped by to visit Miguel and Miguel told him of finding a silver vein in the mountains. Miguel believed it to be a high-grade silver vein such as that of the Ivanpah Mine which was in the same mountains. He told John’s father that he wanted him to file a mining claim on it for him and pointed up the slope into the canyon saying, “It was just around the corner, and you can’t quite see it from the station.”

Miguel said he would give him 50% of everything that came out of it if John’s father would put the claim in his own name. The reason was that Miguel wasn’t a U.S. citizen and couldn’t file the claim paper on it and he trusted John’s father.

John’s father said he would but first he had to finish a survey job and would be back in a week or so to file the paperwork for Miguel. When he returned, Miguel was not at the stagecoach station and had taken sick and died in town. John’s father never knew exactly where the silver vein was and passed the story on to John.

I searched sporadically over a ten-year period looking for the silver vein that Miguel had found. On my last visit to the area, after many years, I finally found what I believed was Miguel’s silver vein.

Join me as I tell you the story and take you up the canyon to where I think Miguel found the high-grade silver vein or what he thought was a high-grade silver vein.

The Lost Ivanpah Silver Vein and History is the extended version where I have added in some of the history of the area along with visiting some of the mines. The story was told to me by John, who I mention in my book, and which I devoted a chapter to.

Don Joaquin’s Lost Gold

Don Joaquin’s Lost Gold was one of the treasure stories that I read in John D. Mitchell’s book, “Lost Mines & Buried Treasures Along the Old Frontier.”

In it he tells the story of a Spaniard, named Don Joaquin Campos from Guadalajara, and his crew that were mining in the Sierra Estrella Mountains around 1840. As Mitchell tells the story a rider came into Don Joaquin’s camp where he had a stone house and mines telling him that the U.S. Army was coming and taking over all the mines. Don Joaquin quickly loaded up all his burros with 1,500 lbs. of gold bars and nuggets and headed out of the mountains. The load was too heavy to move fast so he buried all the gold in the back of an old cave thinking he would come back some day to retrieve it. Mitchell goes on to say that the gold is still buried somewhere in a cave in the Sierra Estrella Mountains even today. The mountains are located just southwest of present-day Phoenix.

In this video I bring up other stories written about the same old rock house and mine that Mitchell talked about. Each story is a little different and I will show and tell you about the research I have done trying to get to the truth of the story. The question remains as to who built the rock house and when?

In the video I will give you some directions and coordinates to get to the trailhead and old rock house. We will also hike up the canyon to show you the rock house, the mine shaft and what looks to be an old, stacked stone corral.

Geronimo's Hidden Treasure

Two old prospectors that lived close to Clarkdale, Arizona passed this treasure story on to a friend in 1970. It seems the old prospectors had done a lot of hiking in Sycamore Canyon over the years in search of the Lost Apache Mine and finally found it.

Around the year 2000 a fellow named Dick, whom my brother was working for, told me a story about the Lost Apache Mine.

Dick said that he met two old prospectors that lived close to Clarkdale, Arizona and they told him the story. It seems they had done a lot of hiking in Sycamore Canyon over the years in search of the Lost Apache Mine and finally found it.

One day while these two old prospectors were hiking back out of the canyon after another failed search, one of them decided to go across the streambed to the other side. When he got over there he stopped to light up a cigarette and looked up above the path they usually walked. All at once he saw the Apache face above the path. By this time, they were getting pretty old, but they still made plans to come back and see if they could open up the mine. It was not to be as the house where they were living burnt down making them move further away from the canyon. So, in the end they had to take solace in knowing they finally found the mine without ever opening it. They told this story to Dick and gave him directions to find the mine.

According to the story a vertical rock face had a shape that looked like an Apache face. Under the nose of the face was supposed to be the entrance to a rich mine. The entrance was up above the streambed and protected by rocks so that it wouldn’t flood during high flows.

A part of the story says that six Spanish soldiers were mining a rich vein somewhere up Sycamore Canyon and decided to leave as the Apache were becoming aggressive and they feared for their lives. They loaded up their burros to leave and were attacked leaving four of them mortally wounded. The two remaining soldiers buried the gold and escaped during the night. They made it back to Mexico City in hopes of returning someday but the Spanish king was withdrawing from this part of the world. They had drawn a map of the location of the mine which was found many years later.

Treasure Hunting in Arizona

This treasure hunt involves a cache of gold nuggets that were buried along the Colorado River about 35 miles north of Yuma, Arizona.

This treasure hunt involves a cache of gold nuggets that were buried along the Colorado River approximately 35 miles north of Yuma, Arizona. The story involves four outlaws that were fleeing after robbing an army payroll wagon. As they rode away to escape the scene, they came to the Colorado River. As they rode along the bank of the river the mountains became to close to the riverbank to proceed. They decided to swim their horses across the river at a point below where the river makes a bend north towards the Arizona side. After crossing the river, they proceeded along the riverbank and came across a small cave where they decided to camp out for the night.

One of the outlaws went down to the sandbar along the bank and dug a hole in it to recover some fresh water. The sand acted as a filter and allowed clear water to seep into the hole. As he was digging the hole, he noticed what looked to be gold nuggets mixed in with the sand and gravel. He quickly called his partners down to the sandbar to confirm that what he had found. The outlaws then started searching for a possible vein that the gold nuggets came from and quickly found a quartz vein close to where the sandbar was. The vein contained more gold nuggets, so they proceeded to mine the vein.

Downstream from where the outlaws were camped was Yuma Wash and the site of an Indian encampment. The outlaws made arrangements with the Indians to take care of their horses while they were mining. Sometime later one of the outlaws went to the Indian encampment and started harassing one of the squaws. Her brave was not having any part of that and confronted the outlaw. During the confrontation, the outlaw pulled his gun and shot the brave. The outlaw then grabbed the horses and rode back to camp and told his partners what he had done.

They knew they needed to get away quickly as they believed the Indians would go down to Fort Yuma and report what had happened. They knew they didn't want to face the cavalry after having recently robbed the payroll wagon. They quickly gathered up the gold nuggets and buried them in a saddle or low area between two peaks above where they were mining. After burying the cache of nuggets, they rode hard to get out of the area.

That night as three of the outlaws were setting around their campfire and the fourth was setting on his horse, a posse came riding in. The posse was looking for cattle rustlers, but the outlaws didn't know that, and a gun battle ensued. The three outlaws around the campfire were killed and the fourth outlaw, who was on his horse, rode quickly away but not before catching a bullet in his hip.

He made it back to Missouri and stayed with his sister while he healed up. He told the story to his sister, her husband, and their son. He showed them a couple of the gold nuggets he had in his pocket to prove his story. The husband wanted the outlaw to take him back to recover the nuggets. The outlaw said that there was an Indian uprising going on at that time which made it too dangerous. As years wore on the outlaw and the sister's husband died leaving her and her son with a failing business.

The son convinced his mother into letting him go to Arizona and look for the nuggets. The son came out and upon arriving in Yuma he approached a rancher and asked him to pack him in for a few weeks along the Colorado River to look for the cache of gold nuggets. In the end the young man could not find the cache of nuggets and upon getting ready to leave, he told the whole story to the rancher. He said that there was a pile of rocks that were supposed to help locate the nuggets. The rocks he believed had been moved and were now stacked around a sign along the river.

Over the years the rancher passed the story down until it was told to John, whom I mention in my book, "Random Tangents: Embracing Adventures in Life." This video will give you a good idea of the country surrounding the story along with some of the history during that time period.

As this man was hiking he came across a hole in the ground and upon looking into it he found round wooden poles and stacks of gold discs. Each disc had a hole in it so that it would slide onto the wooden pole so one could carry them.

At this time, the man was scheduled to ship out to go overseas to fight in World War II. Knowing of his upcoming departure date he decided to cover up the hole until his return. He thought that if he used explosives to seal the entrance he could come back later and dig it out.

Upon going around to a couple of mine sites in the surrounding area he found some dynamite. At this time most of the mining had shut down in the area but there remained buildings and explosive storage bunkers. He took a few sticks along with fuse and blasting cap back to the hole and blasted the hole shut.

After his return from overseas he thought about returning but got caught up in everyday life and never seemed to have the time to go back. At the end of his life, he finally told the story, and it was passed on to my friend, John, whom I have mentioned.

This story was told to me by the old guy, John, that I mention in my book which also includes this story. It is a story of 16 kegs of gold coins buried in the mountains of Arizona.

This story was told to me by the old guy, John, that I mention in my book which also includes this story.

In the video I will tell the story and show you some of the area up on the Mogollon Rim above Payson, Arizona during the summer. The elevation is about 7,000 feet so it is a perfect place to be to escape the desert heat.

The story takes place in 1935 as two Mexican fellows, that were good friends, went hunting east of Hwy. 87 on the Rim Road. They set up camp at a spring along the Rim Road and went hunting early the next morning. About noon they finally came across a deer and one of the fellows was able to get a shot. They went to where the deer fell and saw blood on the ground but no deer, so they started following the blood trail.

As the day went along it was getting towards sunset and they decided to head back to their camp. After a short period of time they knew they wouldn’t be able to get back before dark and decided to camp out where they were.

The found an overhanging rock that would give them shelter and built a small campfire under it. As one of the guys was looking for firewood along a vertical rock face outcropping, he came across what looked like a wooden keg buried in the ground. He cleared away the dirt and opened the top of the wooden keg. It was full of twenty-dollar gold pieces and he shouted to his partner. Together they cleared away more soil and found sixteen small nail kegs in total buried next to one another.

They took some of the coins and covered then all back over with dirt. In 1935 it was illegal to own gold and besides, they knew they could always come back later to get more.

To find out more about the story watch the video. In my book I go further into the details of my search, on and off, over a period of four years. I never found it and I always asked myself if there is a chance the treasure still exists?

Lost Meteorite- Update!

This is an update on the Lost Meteorite story with more details. This takes place next to the Chuckwalla Mountains close to Desert Center, CA.

While driving around the edge of the Chuckwalla Mountains and filming for the video on YouTube, I started looking closer at the mountains and terrain pertaining to the story.

In my book I talked about old John who told me about this story and many others. Over the years I researched and searched for the treasures in many of his stories. In hindsight, it seems old John had his way of telling a story and it usually was told in a way that firmed up the location of where he thought the treasure to be.

Several of the stories, after searching for the treasures, I stepped back and reassessed the story and the possibilities of where the lost treasure could actually be. When doing this I assumed the basic parts of the story were correct and John's interpretation of where the treasure was, may have been off.

Well, after returning to the search area of the lost meteorite, I noticed another rock outcrop setting out from the mountains by itself. It started me thinking again about the story as to how old John told it to me. Could he have been looking at the wrong outcropping?

He said he visited a ranch and talked with the lady there who told him that her husband had found some small fragments of shiny rock that turned out to be platinum. John thought to himself that these fragments were most likely drippings off the meteorite as it went over.

John led me to believe that the old ranch house was not far from Desert Center. In thinking about this, could the meteorite have had a little bit different flight path then old John thought? Could have the meteorite collided with the top of the mountain at a different location? Could have the meteorite have broken apart prior to going over the mountains thus creating a meteorite field and not have hit the mountain at all?

If I was to go back and have a look, I would look at other outcropping that lay away from the main mountain, such as the one we filmed in the video. If this area is a meteorite field then there could be numerous pieces yet to be discovered.

These reefs are about 100 miles offshore and in approximately 6,500 feet of water.

Bougainville Reef had a steel hull of a ship, that had gone aground on it, lying on the windward side of the reef. From the years of continual spray of salt water on it the steel hull was slowly melting away. One could only dive on the windward side of the reef when the ocean was calm or else you were putting yourself into peril by getting washed up onto the reef. We dived this area and found parts to the ship still lying on the underwater shelf on that side. There was also an abundance of sharks in this area, so we didn’t stay long. The rest of the reef had some nice wall dives and very clear water.

Osprey Reef was about twelve miles long and offered a lot of different diving experiences on it. The south end of the reef offered some amazing wall diving and one had to watch your depth gauge as the water was so clear you could easily drop to 100 feet without realizing it. There was also a shelf running down the leeward side from the south end that was about 140 to 160 feet down. One day I counted eleven sharks lying on that shelf as we drifted along.

On the north end was called shark point and it was easily to see why. At 40 to 60 feet down one would have a lot of small reef sharks swimming by you. There was a shelf down at about 120 to 140 feet that was used as a shark feeding point by some dive vessels wanting to film sharks feeding. We didn’t do this as it drew in the much larger whaler and oceanic white tip sharks and who wants to be in the water during a feeding frenzy.

One day, when there was no wind, we were able to go on the windward side with our 78-foot dive vessel, Si Bon, and anchor up. We did a couple of nice dives and started back along the outer edge on a dive when I noticed an iron oblong ring about 18 inches long and 12 inches across. It looked as though it could have been part of an old wooden sailing ship. At the time I was at 80 feet in depth and down to 500 psi in my tank and it was time to head to the top. I picked up the heavy iron ring but couldn’t inflate my vest enough to bring the ring up with me without running out of air. I dropped it and thought someday I would make it back to dive that side once again. Did an old wooden ship run aground here and disappear?

A short distance south of Osprey Reef was what was called Shark Reef and the top of it was at a depth of 50 feet. We found it once and dived on it. The diving wasn’t that great and after 30 minutes I gathered the divers up and headed them back to Si Bon. Once onboard I asked them if any of them had seen the seven oceanic white tip sharks that were slowly moving in towards us. Luckily none of them did and there was no panic.

If you are an avid diver there are still many places to explore on the Great Barrier Reef and into the Coral Sea. Make sure you take the time to explore it on a “live aboard” dive vessel, if possible, one with a good reputation. Cheers!

Adventure: The Why?

I know a lot of people couldn’t live the way I have but if you take and make one adventure happen each year then it won’t be long before you too are looking back over your life of adventures and the memories that went with them.

The adventures in “Random Tangents: Embracing Adventures in Life” are just a few of the adventures that I experienced in life. I know a lot of people couldn’t live the way I have, but if you take and make one adventure happen each year then it won’t be long before you too are looking back over your life of adventures and the memories that went with them.

Whether I was in Australia scuba diving and seeking out new dive spots while meeting different people from all over the world or in the American Southwest hiking in the deserts and mountains chasing some treasure story, it was all about painting a tapestry in my life filled with experiences while learning about myself.

If you want to experience nature, the stars on a clear night and breathing the desert or mountain air then escape for a few days to savor the experience. Disconnect from your social network and focus on the now, the present, that Mother Earth and the Universe has to offer you. There is so much to experience if you quiet your mind and listen, smell and feel the wind pass you by.

The Lost Meteorite

Recently I went back to the Chuckwalla Mountains, southwest of Desert Center, CA, and had a video made of the area. Desert Center now is basically a ghost town used as a pull off for trucks. The last time I was there was 20 years ago and nothing much has changed except more regulations put in place to keep you from driving off road. It was springtime and not long after some rain had fallen, the desert flowers were blooming, and the ocotillo were budding out. The smell of the creosote bush was pungent in the air. It was a magical day as we didn’t encounter another person while we were exploring the area for the whole day.

Recently I went back to the Chuckwalla Mountains, southwest of Desert Center, CA, and had a video made of the area related to this treasure hunt. Desert Center now is basically a ghost town used as a pull off for trucks. The gas station and café are no longer in business.

From Desert Center we headed west on Hwy. 10 to the Red Cloud Road exit. We turned south back under Hwy. 10 and stayed on Red Cloud Mine Road. This road takes you up into the mountains to the old Red Cloud Mine workings. We turned off the Red Cloud Mine Road and headed south on the Gas Line Road. There was an area where I knew some stacked rocks to be that supposedly marked a piece of the meteorite that had landed out here around 1920. After finding the stacked rocks we back tracked and went on a road that paralleled the mountain to another spot where a big piece of the meteorite was supposedly found.

More about this story can be found in my book “Random Tangents: Embracing Adventures in Life” You may also watch our video that we made on this story by clicking the You Tube button on this webpage. It is a start of a collection of treasure videos that I am making based on treasure hunts I went on over a ten-year period. It had been twenty plus years since I had been here and the only thing I see changed was now there were signs telling you the couple of gravel road names and to stay on them. They made the Chuckwalla Mountains a Wilderness Area in 1994 but you still can drive up the Red Cloud Mine Road on the west side of the mountains or the Corn Springs Road on the east side. The area we were in was not part of the Wilderness Area as it was out in the flats.

It was springtime when we filmed this and not long after some rain had fallen, the desert flowers were blooming, and the ocotillo were budding out. It was a magical day with the pungent smell of the creosote bush in the air and not another person in sight for the whole day.

There is also much to see around this area:

If you go 19 miles west of Desert Center you will come to Chiriaco Summit which has a lot of history and a museum set aside for General George S. Patton. General Patton established the Desert Training Center in this area of the desert in 1942 to train over one million men for the war in the Sahara Desert.

If you head east 71 miles from Desert Center to Quartzsite, Arizona, during the months of January and February, you will experience the two-month long Quartzite Gem Show and Swap Meet that runs every day. It boasts of bringing in two million visitors a year to the area. The BLM offers extended campsites in the area for this occasion.

If you head northeast to Parker, Arizona from Desert Center, approximately 106 miles, you can enjoy the Colorado River below the Parker Dam and hospitality at the Blue Water Casino. It has accommodation and a large boat dock on the river if you are into water sports. Not far north from here is Lake Havasu and Lake Havasu City with the Historic London Bridge. This is a much more commercialized area with a larger population of over 50,000. Water sports is also a big draw for this area.

Going south from the Chuckwalla Mountains you may be able to four-wheel down to the Salton Sea by staying on the Summit Road which intersects with the Bradshaw Trail. I never tried it, but it shows up on the maps and the Bradshaw Trail is well recognized. Check out the other four-wheel drive trails in this part of the country as there are some beautiful mountains and areas to be seen. There is the Chuckwalla Wilderness Area which offers some hiking trails which are best negotiated during the cooler months.
